Dear Insiders,

The Choice-Wyndham battle now has the quality of a psychological thriller. Wyndham has taken the biscuit by publishing the following headline on its website: "No Room for Wrong Choice". A humorous response to Choice's recent public accusations... Sarah Douag has dug a little further on the dispute. In the meantime, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has become involved and is keeping a close eye on both parties.

Are you aware that the extreme weather under which we now repeatedly suffer will extend into the 2060s? Home (and hotel) owners will pay for this in various ways, and one of these will be insurance premiums: They will double in the next few years. Hotels are severely affected by this. "Climate changes tourism" is our headline. There are solutions.

According to the first survey of 200 hospitality leaders by the Energy & Environment Alliance (EEA), investors are not so keen on ESG regulators. They feel abandoned. And this is probably also due to the fact that nobody in politics is interested in this sector. Everyone appears to be talking at cross purposes - and that ultimately prevents sustainable investments... Somehow I'm having déjà vu - haven't we, over the course of the last 18 years, already written about this industry, which has no lobby?

At the turn of the year, many market reports come in, bringing with them retrospective or forward-looking figures: For example, Spanish hotel transactions have topped all others in Europe, the German government is making serious money from emissions trading, the economic strength of the German holiday home market is significantly stronger than public statistics suggest, city tourism has mega-potential, caravanning remains a strong trend despite losses.

Sylvie Konzack, who compiles our news mix almost every week, is still amazed at the number of new hotel projects. Of course, this signals movement in the market, but everything is geared towards the next few years.

On the other hand, our personalia this week are very much in the here and now - as are our trend reports on the public pages: Austria has its first queer hotel, Marriott CEO Tony Capuano takes 418th place in the ranking of the most influential CEOs, ITB 2024 discovers the technology revolution, Tristar expands its own employee academy and 2024 could be another record year!

Great! So everything stays the same and we don't have to rethink anything.

I wish you a harmonious week, I will be at the AOHIS Investor Conference in Madrid!

Yours, Maria Pütz-Willems

To begin a fast-paced year: Slowness

12.1.2024

Dear Insiders,

Welcome to the New Year! Once again, opportunities and risks lie ahead of us and the pace remains brisk. Not everyone thinks straight away about getting out, but many long for a slower more leisurely pace and a circle of like-minded people to which they want to belong. Claus Sendlinger has turned this wish into a business model: "Slowness". The latest hospitality project has been simmering for years in the remote east of Berlin but will grow into a complete work of art this year and next.
