This step brings a significant reduction in annual CO2 emissions. Previously, GSH's electricity mix emissions were 252g CO2/kWh compared to the Germany-wide electricity mix of 434g CO2/kWh. However, green electricity from hydropower has an emission of only 2.7g CO2/kWh. With an annual electricity consumption of about 11 million kWh, this means a CO2 reduction of 2,742t CO2 per year.
According to the Munich-based company, this measure leads to a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions at the headquarters and the 40 hotels in the DACH region. This also meets the increasing climate protection requirements from the RFPs of corporate and private customers and leads to higher sustainability classifications at OTAs.
By comparison, the average CO2 footprint per capita in Germany is 10.8 tonnes. GSH CFO Marco El Manchi, also responsible for sustainability, notes that the emissions now saved within the group are equivalent to the CO2 footprint of approximately 256 German citizens. To compensate for the same amount of CO2 by planting trees, 221,760 beech trees would have to be planted annually (gsh-hotels.com).
