Hong Kong tops the rankings as the most expensive city in terms of cost of living, with German cities moving further up the list. Overall, costs are rising sharply or even steeply everywhere.

Mercer's "Cost of Living City Ranking" survey covers 226 cities around the world. It measures the comparable costs for more than 200 cost factors in each location. These include housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.

The Figures used for comparison come from a survey conducted in March 2024. Mercer is a subsidiary of Marsh McLennan, a global provider of professional services in risk, strategy and HR with annual revenues of USD 23 billion and over 85,000 employees. / red
