The year is 1950, there are around 71 million people living in Germany (FRG & GDR), the most populous country in the world is China with 544 million inhabitants. By 2024, these figures will look very different. The front runner is now India.



Background to the UN population projections 

The UN publishes a new projection of the global population every two years, so the last publication was in 2022. You can read about the UN's methodology in its 2022 Methodology Report. The data now published is based on the reference year 2023. For Germany, the latest data from the census has not yet been taken into account, meaning that the assumed starting population is around 1.4 million people too high. / red
