Munich. Germany's number one problem bank, Hypo Real Estate, was still represented at the Expo Real in Munich. Staff attending the event were certain to have felt a little like Knut the polar bear, one visitor commented with a wry smile. The global financial crisis was the dominant theme in all conversations and specialist discussion rounds. The mood was palpably subdued although not dramatically negative. This impression is also true of the hotel industry: Here, just as in other branches, everyone is trying to see something positive for his or her company in the stream of bad news.
Frankfurt. LiV'iN Hotel & Residence has now opened in Bleichstrasse in Frankfurt's city centre. The hotel is managed by the Frankfurt based HMG - Hotel Managing & Service Company Ltd, that already operates 18 hotels and apartment houses and has announced further expansion plans.

Berlin. Grand City Hotels & Resorts, one of Germany's biggest franchise companies, plans to up its number of hotels from 52 to 150 within the space of as little as three years. Grand City is looking to take on chains as well as private hotels in the 2 to 4 star category.
