Hotels Tomorrow - and the leaps forward of today

Hotels Tomorrow - and the leaps forward of today

Dear Insider,

Have you heard of "The Unconference"? This is the subtitle of Hotels Tomorrow, the new Europe-focused conference in Paris that I will be organising together with Marc Werner and Marius Gomola on 17-18 February.  The "three M's" want a relaxed event format and lots of interaction - not mega, just good. Café & croissants give way to in-depth topics from investment, finance, operations, ESG, distribution, talents & people, various markets and more. It's not quantity that counts, but quality. 30-, 60- or 90-minute talks are there so that we learn from each other. There are also no CEOs in six-packs on stage. HOT selects.

On today's edition: Fred Fettner jumped to the top of the Alps to see how prices for tourist real estate were rising in the valley below. A report for investors and tourism professionals shows: Austria is top, but the United States and Switzerland do better still.

Are you still recycling - or is your hotel/resort already plastic-free? Pioneer Six Senses has shown how to reduce this harmful waste in the operation in a webinar for colleagues. The group has identified 18 categories of plastic. And in purchasing alone, orders for these items fell from 1.14 million in 2019 to 0.59 million in 2022. Kirsten Posautz listened in.

How many young innovators do you know? Probably not many. That's why Sarah Douag asked three students why they became creative and then nervous about suddenly being on stage in the "Sustainable Student Challenge" - organised by Hotelschool The Hague. One of them invented a device that converts leftover food into renewable fuel for the barbecue. Another came up with a fabric that purifies the air indoors.

Our shorter news today has lots of material: AccorInvest CEO Gilles Clavie told the public for the first time last week in Paris how the investment arm of Accor has recovered from an absolute low. And who is the new Steigenberger Managing Director Dr Stephan Hungeling helping to reach a new high? The man who ran a jewellery chain, among other things, will show whether Steigenberger can be trimmed back to a gemstone and H World cut into a diamond. That's what I see.

The Swiss have changed their classification significantly in some cases - which is a good thing. Austria recorded a super-super-summer with the highest number of guests in the industry's history. In our personnel section, ex-Accorian Peter Verhoeven checks back into the hospitality industry, while Luc Boschmans leaves Tristan Capital Partners. Our News Mix is also full to bursting again this week - despite slow motion in the industry, there is still plenty to report.

In Public Content today: Italy forces vacation rental providers to register in order to curb fraud. Coasts and oceans need millions and millions to mitigate climate change - and thus save the future of resorts. And life goes on, many are now drawn back to the Christmas markets - and look at the accommodation prices; a portal compares. Where is it still safe to travel to? A risk map has all the information.

I wish you a good pre-Christmas business!

Cost balancing act in DACH, luxury flow in EMEA

Cost balancing act in DACH, luxury flow in EMEA

29.11.2024

Dear Insider,

Sometimes it would be great to have a crystal ball. What's next - and what will the year 2025 bring? In the face of such uncertainty, many hotel chains struggle with budgeting. The cost balance is most delicate in the DACH region. Susanne Stauss asked Gorgeous Smiling Hotels, Althoff Hotels, SV Hotel, Meliá, Leonardo and Motel One how they manage the cost balancing act. The new "Treugast Hospitality Index" also reflects the current dynamics and drama in the industry.

The stumbling blocks are piling up. The fact that Achat Hotels has filed for insolvency, as was announced yesterday, is a further signal of how serious the economic situation is for the players. In 2023, together with B&B Hotels, Achat was still the fastest-growing hotel chain in Germany. And now this.
