Shanghai. China is one of the two largest CO2 emitters along with the US and just pushed back its climate targets by 20 years, to 2070. Just at this moment, the large state-owned hotel conglomerate of Jin Jiang announces to "establish an international framework for environmental responsibility".
London. While governments are finalizing the latest measures taken against climate change at the COP26 in Glasgow, a report is already warning that it won't be enough. No sector in society is currently doing enough says the document. Responsible for 8% of global emissions, the tourism industry is no exception. But it is showing some resilience and determination to do better – with the help of technology.
Amsterdam. When the mayor said Amsterdam is going green and tourism from the past can't return post-Covid, she meant it. Enforcing a series of new and stricter regulations, the Dutch capital is targeting speculators, real estate investors, short-term rental platforms and even hotel developers. Amsterdam is one of these cities that turns words into actions often at a fast pace.
London. In order to cope with the climate challenges, only networks and common goals can help. The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, to which 14 chains currently belong, is now positioning itself as the voice of hospitality specialists in cooperation with the World Travel and Tourism Council. It also wants to provide practical help to small and large hotels.
Glasgow/London. All eyes are on the 26th UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow this week, the COP26 - Conference of The Parties - with representatives from 50 countries. It is a meeting between wishful thinking and reality, in which tourism still has one of the greatest chances to make a positive difference faster than others. Nevertheless, it is sobering to note that if corona had not existed, the issue of sustainability would still not have reached two thirds of the executives.
Munich. The cost pressures that bear down on hoteliers' shoulders is great. Digital tools help, but the input initially required is substantial. Best example from hotel construction: BIM, Building Information Modeling. An Expo Real discussion illustrated the opportunities this tool provides. And it will also pay off in the long run - especially for hotel groups willing to expand with a feeling for standardisation.

He gave an outlook on the next ten years, on what we are seeing across the world, not just in terms of the pandemic but across trends and issues as well as their impact on sustainability and on sustainable hospitality. For himself, he said, "it was without a doubt the most difficult forecasting period ever to analyse."
