Forecasts versus sense
Great mood at ITB and great forecasts – But insecurity remains

Business is back on
Berlin. Business is humming again, but there is still some scepticism. Particularly at the 14th International Hotel Investment Forum, it turned out that the financial world cannot keep up with the sector’s demand for new projects yet. There are still major regional differences. In contrast, the 45th ITB was more colourful and versatile: the largest tourism barometer in the world indicated “clear weather”, the mood was positive right from the start and significantly better than last year. However, order volumes during the five days remained on the 2010 level of more than six billion euros – at least according to a preliminary estimate. A comparison of statistics showed decreasing numbers of visitors, whereas the number of trade visitors remained on the same level. The convention supporting programme turned out to be an ITB magnet recording a 15-percent increase in visitors.
No vision for the future
Berlin. China, Russia, South America: Emerging markets continue to bring a sparkle to developer eyes. Yet also in other regions, investments can make sense, provided the preparatory work was thorough enough. Non-Europeans didn't paint a rosy picture of Europe, and attempts were made to correct prejudices with regard to Russia. Market analyses presented by various experts at the 15th International Hotel Investment Forum last week in Berlin this time took better account of individual country idiosyncrasies, yet the contents still only scratch the surface. And on the CEO panel, the gentleman again basked in their strategies and pipelines. There was no more to be seen or heard of the IHIF motto "Vision for the Future".
Battle for online dominance
Berlin. "Fewer providers with more power?" The slogan of the distribution panel at ITB Berlin's 7th "ITB Hospitality Day" was also the answer: a consolidation process is going on among online travel agents that will leave behind several portals. Online distribution is becoming more and more complex. New portals or niche business models ensure an increasing number of newcomers. At the same time, the giants are preparing a counterstrike.
Super Synergies
Berlin.
