Training forms the main reason to travel
7.3.2008

Frankfurt. The main reason for business travel in the year 2007 is surprising: As the current "Loves and Hates" study conducted by American Express shows, most staff travelling in the year 2007 did so in order to take part in training events. Client appointments made a close second. In comparison to the previous year, 92 percent of German business travellers travelled just as much or more this year. The significance of travel management thus continues to grow. Sustainable management, increased costs and new information technology have had no impact in this regard.

Printed meeting guides are still in high demand among planners
Print for an overview, online for immersing

Hamburg. An Internet portal instead of printed catalogue, e-mails instead of letters, a weblog instead of an advertising brochure - the Internet is superseding printed paper. This simple equation holds true for many areas, but not always. Meeting organisers obviously prefer a 2.5 kg handbook instead of a computer keyboard, at least for getting an initial overview of what their desired destination has to offer. Even an international meeting organiser trusts in printed media. In practice, there seems to be a guiding rule: Print for an overview, online for the details. But why?

22.2.2008

Munich/Bangkok. Because Sonu Shivdasani believes in numerology, the next Six Senses Resort in Thailand will open on 13 September 2008 between 9:13 and 9:20 a.m. Indeed all three of the new resorts due to be opened by the innovative resort and spa specialist are full of promise. Among them is a holistic destination spa, that is to set so-called "lifestyle paths". The new idea paves the way to a whole new type of spa. And to complement all of this, Six Senses has also announced a new brand.

FITUR Spain reflects world's trends
15.2.2008

Madrid. The tourism trade fair FITUR in Madrid, the second largest trade fair in the world after the ITB Berlin, reflected the global movement in the travel industry. The US and Great Britain, both shaken by the bank crises, will probably contribute to fewer overnight stays this year.

EURO 2008 in Austria: Higher rates expected only on match days
No own-goal in sight
8.2.2008

Vienna. In June 2008, some beds will remain empty in Austria's venues of the Euro 2008. Therefore, Austria's hotel industry is ruling out any snowballing rates. As in Germany, the football event will bring business travelling and conference tourism almost to a standstill.

Euro 2008 in Switzerland: Be warned of fixing expectation too high
Disputed effects
8.2.2008

Zurich. Euro '08 fever hasn't really taken hold in Switzerland. In the Swiss capital, Bern, where three games are scheduled to take place, many residents fear violent clashes between fans and a repeat of the antics seen at recent demonstrations. "Football matches often end in violence," one police officer said, who on Sunday was on duty along the Bern-Basel rail stretch. Even hoteliers hold back their enthusiasm for the event.

The World Economic Forum (WEF): state of emergency in Davos
No hectic atmosphere behind the Poestli scenes
1.2.2008

Davos. Every time that Prime Minister Gordon Brown, AL Gore, Condoleezza Rice, Tony Blair or Queen Rania of Jordan walk through the lobby of the Steigenberger Belvédère Davos with their entourage, security people clear them an approximately two-metre wide path, pushing the other guests and media people briefly aside. This can also happen to other illustrious guests - such as Bill Gates, Nestlé's boss Peter Brabeck or PepsiCo CEO Indra K. Nooyi. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, not everyone can after all be the number 1. And behind the scenes everything is different too. Silvia Pfenniger, our correspondent in Switzerland, is right in the middle of it.
