Berlin. Be yourself. Scandic encourages its employees and guests to be exactly this. The hotel chain's board of directors has adopted a guideline on diversity and inclusion – banning any form of discrimination. When recruiting new employees, Scandic allows video applications.
Dresden/Hong Kong. The Institute of Global Hospitality Research was founded in Dresden on June 1, 2019. World-renowned universities and academies in Dresden, Hong Kong, Vienna and Helsinki will be working closely together in this institution. Further international schools have already asked for cooperation. The institute will be headed by Prof. Dr. Hartwig Bohne.
Vienna. More and more Austrian tourism associations are putting together ideas to support local hotel businesses in their increasingly demanding search for workers. Bonus cards with various benefits for tourism workers are seen as a particularly effective means of achieving this. The destinations attract all kinds of labour skills in this way and present the hotels as an ideal environment. However, the advertising message must pass the "reality check" vis-à-vis the employee.
Bangkok/Bluche. Minor Hotels announced the establishment of the Asian Institute of Hospitality Management in academic association with Les Roches Global Hospitality Education, Switzerland. Minor needs to recruit over 6,000 staff members every year.
London. Hilton has extended its lead as the world's most valuable hotel brand while the total value of its brand portfolio has overtaken Marriott's. Hilton's brand value growth was largely driven by strong revenue increase over the last year. Mercure is the world's strongest hotel brand.
Frankfurt. As rents continue to rise and housing shortages intensify, the provision of accommodation is playing an increasingly important role in attracting hotel employees. Whether an apartment is provided as part of the employment contract often decides on whether the job is accepted or not. The real estate developer Evan Group has turned the urgency in the industry into a business model. The resort industry already has many good ideas and initiatives. Managers there are coming up with solutions. In the mountains and in lakeside destinations, there are enormous location disadvantages to contend with. Yet some businesses have been successful in recruiting staff because they also provide accommodation and offer added value packages with their employment contracts.
Frankfurt. The employees are gone. Or they don’t come at all. The calamity is there. And the industry can no longer run away from its own problem, but it tries nonetheless: politicians and associations still talk of a shortage of skilled workers while hoteliers and other experts already name it a shortage of employees. Germany's hotel industry is experiencing a boom in its history like never before: tourists are pouring in, capital is flowing, hotel construction is booming. It is an outright success story – but one that is driven by third parties. Both operators and individual hoteliers need to make this story a sustainable success. Some are starting to fight, becoming creative. But the big picture shows that the industry is drowning right in the middle of the boom.
Munich. Qualified staff are hotly contested. And a bad review as employer on portals such as kununu.com are not only annoying, but can also make recruiting new staff difficult.
